Chernarus · the original map
Chernarus survival guide
The map DayZ was built on, and still the one most people play. It is temperate, green and busy, which means rain, wolves and other survivors kill more people here than hunger ever will. Here is how to get off the coast and stay alive.
Map facts
Chernarus at a glance
Chernarus is the original DayZ map, a fictional post-Soviet republic that came with the game in 2013 and with the Arma 2 mod before that. At roughly 225 km² it was the biggest official map until Nasdara arrived in October 2026, and it is still the map with the most towns, the most military sites and the most players on official servers.
For a town-by-town description of the map see the maps page, and for an interactive map with loot and spawn layers see interactive maps.
Where you spawn
The two coasts
Fresh characters spawn along the south coast, from Kamenka in the west through Chernogorsk and Elektrozavodsk, and along the east coast, from Berezino up to Svetlojarsk. The game tells you nothing. The quickest way to find out where you are is a road sign, a town name on the next building you pass, or the coastline itself: if the sea is on your left while you walk with the sun, you are on the south coast heading east.
- South coast (Kamenka, Komarovo, Balota, Chernogorsk, Elektrozavodsk, Kamyshovo, Solnichniy): busiest, most fights, the quickest route to Balota airstrip and the big cities.
- East coast (Berezino, Nizhnoye, Svetlojarsk, Olsha): quieter, more fishing villages, a long walk to any military site, but a straight road north to the NEAF and Novodmitrovsk.
Every coastal town has a water pump. Drink until the icon is full before you leave the coast, because inland wells are further apart.
First hour
Off the coast in sixty minutes
The coast is where fresh spawns meet geared players coming back for easy kills. The plan is the same every life: get water, get a knife, get a bag, get out.
- Drink at the first pump you see. Fill any bottle or canteen you find.
- Find a blade. A kitchen knife from a house, a screwdriver, or a stone knife from two small stones picked up off a gravel path. You need it to cut rags, open cans and skin animals.
- Make a bag. A courier bag from rags and rope, or an improvised backpack from a burlap sack, rope and sticks, if you do not find a real one in a house.
- Eat anything sealed. Cans beat fruit. Fruit from the ground is fine; mushrooms and berries are a gamble for a new player.
- Pick a direction and go. From the south coast, go north-west towards Zelenogorsk and Green Mountain, or north through Stary Sobor. From the east coast, go north-west towards Gorka and Novy Sobor. Stay off the main road: walk fifty metres inside the treeline that runs beside it.
Our full starter loadout lists what to find and in what order; the survival guide explains the status icons you will be watching.
Going inland
Our route north
Our route, not gospel. From Chernogorsk or Elektrozavodsk, the classic loop is west to Balota airstrip (low-tier military, lots of players), north to Zelenogorsk and its military base, then north-east through Vybor and Kabanino to the Northwest Airfield. From Berezino, go west to Gorka, north to Novodmitrovsk and Severograd, then west along the top of the map to Kamensk military base and Tisy. Both loops pass a well every twenty minutes or so, which is the whole point.
| Stop | Why | Danger |
|---|---|---|
| Balota airstrip | Two hangars, barracks, first chance at a rifle | High: five minutes from the spawn coast |
| Zelenogorsk military base | Barracks and tents in the west, a step up in gear | Medium |
| Green Mountain | Radio tower on a hill, a landmark you can navigate by from anywhere in the west | Low loot, famous for ambushes |
| Stary Sobor tents | Military tents in the dead centre of the map | Medium: everyone passes through |
| Northwest Airfield | The best loot on the map: hangars, barracks, the ATC tower | Highest. Approach from the trees, never down the runway |
| Tisy military base | Far north-west, high-tier gear, a long way from anywhere | Medium: fewer players, more wolves |
Military loot
Where the gear is
Chernarus has three tiers of military site. The coastal strip (Balota, the Kamenka and Elektro tents) spawns pistols, shotguns and the odd submachine gun. The middle band (Zelenogorsk, Myshkino tents, Stary Sobor, Vybor military, the Krasnostav airstrip) spawns rifles and vests. The top band (the Northwest Airfield, Tisy, Kamensk, the Pavlovo and Rify gas zones) is where assault rifles, marksman rifles and plate carriers live. The full list with every site ranked is on best loot by map, and best weapons tells you which rifle is worth the walk.
Helicopter crash sites spawn across the north and west of the map and carry the rarest guns. Listen for the explosion, then look for the smoke. See events.
Gas zones
Pavlovo and the Rify
Chernarus has two static contaminated zones that never move: the military base at Pavlovo in the south-west, and the Rify, the wrecked cargo ship on the north-east coast above Berezino. Both are full of top-tier gear and both will kill you in minutes without the full NBC suit, a mask with a filter and a PO-X antidote in case the mask fails. Dynamic gas zones also appear for about 35 minutes at a time over military sites. Everything you need to know is in gas zones and in the survival guide.
What kills you
Rain, wolves and people
Rain
Chernarus rains a lot. Wet clothes drain your temperature, and hypothermia leads to pneumonia. Carry a raincoat or get under a roof when the sky turns, and dry out by a fire. See warm and cool.
Wolves
Packs roam the northern and western forests, especially around Tisy, the NWAF and the Black Mountain area. They circle, then rush. Get your back to a tree or a wall, and use a shotgun or a rifle, not a knife. See wolves.
Bears
Rare, slow to anger, and able to kill you in two hits. If one stands up, back away. Only fight with a rifle and a full magazine.
Other survivors
The coast, Balota, Stary Sobor and the NWAF are where most fights happen. Assume anyone you see has seen you. Our rules for meeting other players apply double on this map.
Night
Nights are dark enough that you cannot see a road under your feet. A head torch or a chemlight, or log in at a different time of day. See night.
Cholera
Drinking from ponds and streams without boiling or purification. Wells are safe. The cure is charcoal tablets and a lot of clean water.
Places to know
Landmarks you navigate by
- Green Mountain: the radio tower on a hill west of Zelenogorsk, visible for miles.
- Devil's Castle and Zub Castle: ruined castles on hilltops in the north and south-west, decent loot and a long view.
- Black Mountain: the high ground north of Berezino, with its own military site.
- Skalisty Island: the small island off the south-east coast, reachable by swimming from Kamyshovo. Quiet, a few buildings, nowhere to run.
- Prison Island: the former prison off the south coast near Kamenka, a swim and a gamble.
- Novodmitrovsk, Severograd, Novaya Petrovka: the big northern towns, the best civilian loot on the map and the furthest from the spawn coast.
Every town is described on the maps page.
