Cooking in DayZ, meal by meal
The crafting page lists every cooking method. This guide is the other half: what to cook first, how long each thing takes before it burns, how to cook with nothing but a stick, which foods are worth carrying, and how to feed three people from one fire without anyone getting sick.
First meal
The fastest safe meal from spawn
Fresh characters are hungry and thirsty at once, and the cans on the coast run out. The quickest safe hot meal needs a knife, a fire and one animal or fish. Order of work: make a knife from two small stones, collect sticks, light a fire with matches, a lighter or a hand drill kit, then catch a mackerel off any pier or kill a chicken behind a house. Fillet, sharpen a stick, hold the fillet in the fire until it reads cooked, eat. From a bare spawn that is twenty minutes, and it feeds you for hours. Everything after that is refinement: a pot so you can boil water at the same time, a pan for fat, a stone oven so the fire is hidden.
The fire itself is covered step by step on the crafting and fire page.
The kit
What each cooking item does
| Item | Best for | Size and weight |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking pot | Boiling several items plus water at once; the most forgiving method | Large and heavy, but doubles as a water carrier |
| Frying pan | Frying with fat; baking without water | Lighter than a pot, burns food faster |
| Campfire tripod | Hangs the pot over the fire so it heats evenly | Optional; a pot on the fire itself also works |
| Sharpened stick | One steak or fillet at a time, no pot | Free, from any long stick and a knife |
| Stone oven | Baking with a hidden flame; stones around a fireplace | Built in place, not carried |
| Gas stove and canister | Cooking indoors with no smoke and no wood | Canisters run out; see fire types |
If you carry one thing, carry the pot. If you carry two, add the pan for fat, because fried food is faster and fat itself can be eaten in an emergency.
Timing
How long before it burns
Food on a fire moves through raw, cooked and burnt, and nothing warns you except the item name changing. Rough timings on an official server, from the moment the pot or pan is hot:
- Boiling in water: the slowest and safest. Items cook in a few minutes and will not burn while there is water in the pot. When the water is gone they start to dry, then burn. Top the water up rather than taking the pot off.
- Baking in a dry pot or pan, or the oven: cooks in roughly half the time of boiling and burns soon after. Check every thirty seconds.
- Frying with fat: fastest of all. Put the fat in first, the meat second, take it off the moment it reads cooked.
- On a stick: cooks quickly, and you are holding it, so you see the state change. Take it out of the flame as soon as it turns.
Vegetables and mushrooms cook faster than steaks; fish fillets sit between. Mixed pots burn the small things first, so pull vegetables early and leave the meat. Burnt food still feeds you, but at a fraction of the value, and twice-burnt food is ruined.
No pot
Cooking with nothing
You do not need cookware. A long stick sharpened with a knife holds one steak, fillet or vegetable at a time in the flame. Mushrooms, berries and most vegetables can be eaten raw with no risk. Fruit from trees is safe raw. What you must cook: every meat, every fish, and anything that has been in dirty water. Raw meat carries salmonella and raw fish the same; the illness table has the symptoms and the cure if you risked it. Eating human meat, cooked or not, gives kuru, which has no cure.
Water follows the same rule. Boil it in a pot, add a chlorine tablet or drink from a well or pump, which are always clean. Ponds and streams are not.
Worth cooking
Which foods are worth the weight
Ranked by what our item pages list as energy and water per portion, and by how easy it is to get. Steak values are per cooked steak; one animal gives several.
| Food | From | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beef and bear steak | Cows; bears | The biggest steaks in the game. A cow is the single best animal to find; a bear is the most dangerous way to the same meal. |
| Mouflon steak | Mouflon (mountain sheep) | Our page lists it as the richest steak by a wide margin; treat that figure as single-source until checked in game. |
| Carp and trout fillets | Fresh water | The best fish; two fillets per fish, high water content too. See the fishing guide. |
| Venison, boar, pork, reindeer | Deer, boar, pigs, reindeer (Sakhal) | Solid mid-size steaks and the most common game on every map. |
| Mackerel fillet | The sea | Smaller than carp but the easiest fish to catch; the coast feeds you on day one. |
| Zucchini, pumpkin, potato | Gardens; the farming guide | The best vegetables; bake them. Pumpkin cuts into slices for sharing. |
| Mushrooms | Forests | Good food and water raw or cooked; avoid none in vanilla, but learn the yellow ones give more water. |
| Goat, sheep, wolf, hare | Small game and predators | Small portions. Cook them if you have them, but do not hunt a wolf for its steak. |
The food table sorts every item by energy, water and weight.
Feeding a group
One fire, three people, nobody sick
A pot of water takes four or more items at once, so a group cooks in one pot and takes turns pulling food. Rules that stop arguments: one person watches the fire and nothing else; vegetables go in last and come out first; every steak goes on a stick or in the pot, never eaten raw to save time; the pot water is drunk after the meal, since it is boiled. A cow or a bear feeds four people for a session. Two fishing rods on a pier out-produce a hunter in an hour and make no noise, which matters more the bigger the group.
Keeping it
Stopping food from rotting
Cooked meat and fish last hours in a pack and longer in a cold place; raw meat rots fastest, then cooked, then dried. Drying is the long-term answer: leave cooked meat in a pot or pan after the water has gone, watch it, and take it off when it reads dried. Dried meat keeps for days of real time. Vegetables rot slowly whether raw or cooked, cans never rot, and on Sakhal the cold freezes raw food solid, which preserves it until you thaw it by a fire. Store the surplus in a crate or sea chest at a base; rot continues in storage, only slower.
Quick answers
Questions people ask
How do you cook meat in DayZ?
Put it in a cooking pot or frying pan on a fire, or hold it in the fire on a sharpened stick. Boiling in water is the safest method because food does not burn while there is water in the pot. Take it off when the item name says cooked.
Can you eat raw meat in DayZ?
Not safely. Raw meat and fish cause salmonella. Vegetables, mushrooms, fruit and berries are safe raw.
How long does food take to cook in DayZ?
A few minutes boiled, about half that baked, and less again fried in fat. Vegetables cook faster than steaks. Food burns soon after it is cooked unless it is in water.
What is the best food in DayZ?
Beef and bear steaks are the biggest, carp and trout fillets the best fish, and zucchini and pumpkin the best vegetables. Cans are convenient but run out; a rod or a garden does not.
How do you dry meat in DayZ?
Cook it in a pot or pan, let the water boil away or use a dry pan, and leave it on the heat until it reads dried, watching so it does not burn. Dried meat lasts days.
