Fishing in DayZ, from stick to fillet
A fishing rod is the quietest, lightest and most reliable food source in DayZ. This guide covers making or finding one, bait, where fish actually bite, traps, Sakhal ice fishing, and turning a fish into a meal that keeps you alive for hours.
Why fish
The best calories per gram of gear
Fishing beats hunting on three counts: it makes no noise, it needs no ammunition, and the gear weighs almost nothing. One carp or mackerel cooked gives more food than most cans, and the same stretch of water keeps producing. The costs are time, standing still in the open, and water: you have to be at a pond, lake, river or the sea, which on Chernarus and Livonia is nearly everywhere and on Sakhal means the coast or a hole in the ice.
Rods and hooks
Making or finding a rod
There are two rods.
| Rod | How you get it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Simple fishing rod | Craft: a long wooden stick plus rope | Made in a minute from any tree and any rope; rope itself can be made from rags or guts. Wears out faster than a real rod. |
| Fishing rod | Loot: boat houses, piers, sheds, fishing villages | Lasts longer and can be repaired with duct tape. Not needed to fish well. |
Both rods need a hook. Fishing hooks spawn in the same coastal and shed loot as rods; a bone hook is crafted from bones with a knife, and a wooden hook from a small stick. Hooks are consumed over time, so carry two. Attach the hook to the rod, then attach bait to the hook.
Bait
Worms, and what else works
The standard bait is an earthworm. Dig for worms on any soft ground with a knife, hoe or shovel; each dig gives a few. Fishing with no bait catches nothing. Hooks can also take small pieces of raw meat, and a net trap or small fish trap uses worms or bait inside the trap rather than on a line. Keep a stack of worms in a pocket; they do not spoil quickly.
Where to cast
Where fish bite on each map
Fish spawn by the type of water, not by a secret spot.
| Water | What you catch | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
| Sea | Mackerel, sardines | Any coast. The whole east and south coast of Chernarus; Sakhal's shoreline; Livonia has no sea. |
| Lakes and ponds | Carp, steelhead trout | Chernarus: Prud lake, the reservoirs near Stary Sobor, village ponds. Livonia: the big lakes and the Biela river. Sakhal: inland water is frozen; see ice fishing. |
| Rivers and streams | Carp, trout | Livonia's river system; small Chernarus streams. |
Stand at the water's edge, aim at open water deep enough to swim in and cast. Shallow puddles and the very edge of a pond give nothing. On Chernarus the fastest reliable spot for a fresh spawn is any coastal town pier: rod, hook, worms and the sea are all within a hundred metres of each other.
How to fish
The action, step by step
- Rod in hands, hook attached, bait on the hook.
- Stand at the water, look at it, and hold the cast action. The line goes out.
- Wait. A bite shows as a message and a tug; use the action again to reel in. Reeling too early or too late loses the bait.
- Each catch costs some bait and wears the hook. Re-bait and cast again.
Fishing takes about a minute per cast, and you are standing still in the open the whole time. Pick a bank with cover behind you, fish at dawn or in rain when fewer people are about, and put the rod away before you walk anywhere. On consoles the prompts are the same actions on the d-pad and triggers; see controls.
Traps
Fishing without standing there
A fish net trap is crafted from netting and placed in water; a small fish trap is made from a plastic bottle. Both are baited, left in water and checked later: they catch small fish or sardines over time, slowly, without you present. Traps are the farming equivalent for fish, good next to a base and easy to lose to another player who spots them. For hunting traps and snares see the wildlife guide.
Ice fishing on Sakhal
Fishing through the ice
On Sakhal the lakes and much of the inland water are frozen, so inland fishing means ice fishing. Use an ice axe or pickaxe on a frozen lake to cut a hole, then fish through the hole with a normal rod and bait. The coast is open water and fishes normally, but the sea is the coldest place on the map to stand still, so build a fire first and fish in short spells. The Sakhal survival guide explains the warmth rules; the short version is that a fish is not worth frostbite.
Fillet and cook
From catch to meal
Use a knife on a whole fish to get fillets: a carp fillet, mackerel fillet or trout fillet. Raw fish can make you ill; cook it. The cleanest method is boiling in a cooking pot of water over a fire, which never burns it; baking on a stick works with attention; a frying pan needs fat or it burns. Cooked fish lasts hours in a pack and dried fish lasts longer again. Every method is in the cooking guide and the cooking states table. Sardines are eaten whole, no filleting.
Quick answers
Questions people ask
How do you fish in DayZ?
Get a rod (craft one from a long stick and rope), attach a hook, bait it with an earthworm, stand at open water and cast. Reel in when you get a bite, then fillet the fish with a knife and cook it.
How do you make a fishing rod in DayZ?
Combine a long wooden stick with rope to make a simple fishing rod. Rope can be crafted from rags or guts. Then add a fishing hook, bone hook or wooden hook, and bait.
Where do you get bait in DayZ?
Dig for earthworms on soft ground with a knife, hoe or shovel. Small pieces of raw meat also work on a hook.
Can you ice fish in DayZ?
Yes, on Sakhal. Cut a hole in a frozen lake with an ice axe or pickaxe and fish through it with a normal rod.
Where are the best fishing spots in DayZ?
Any sea coast for mackerel and sardines; lakes, reservoirs and rivers for carp and trout. The water type matters, not the exact spot. Coastal piers are the fastest start on Chernarus.
