How loot spawns in DayZ

Nothing in DayZ spawns at random. A server-wide system called the Central Loot Economy counts every item, decides where it may appear and removes it when it has sat too long. Once you know the rules you stop asking why the barracks was empty and start knowing where the rifle went.

The CLE

One economy for the whole server

The Central Loot Economy (CLE) is the part of the server that owns every item on the map. For each item type it keeps a target count, a list of building categories and map zones the item may appear in, a value tier, and a lifetime. Every few minutes it checks the real count against the target and spawns replacements in valid spots that no player is near. Items only spawn when the count is below target, which is why a town picked clean by one player stays clean for everyone until the economy catches up, and why a new server fills up fast.

The spots are not random either. Each building type has loot positions, and each position has categories: a kitchen spawns food and tools, a police station weapons and ammo, a barracks military gear. A M4-A1 cannot appear in a cottage because no cottage position allows it.

Map tiers

Why the north has the rifles

Each official map is divided into value tiers. On Chernarus the coast is tier 1, the middle tiers 2 and 3, and the far north and west, Tisy and the north-west airfield, tier 4. An item's definition says which tiers it may spawn in: a Mosin spawns across most of the map, an M4 only in the highest tiers and specific military positions, and some items only at dynamic events such as helicopter crashes and convoys. Livonia tiers run roughly south to north, Sakhal from the main island outwards, and Nasdara from the spawn edge inland. The loot by source pages list where each category appears, and the rarity pages group items by how many the economy keeps.

Nominal and minimum

How many of a thing exist

Two numbers matter per item: nominal, the count the economy aims for, and minimum, the floor below which it spawns replacements immediately. A rare rifle might have a nominal of a handful for the whole map; a can of beans has hundreds. The count includes items in players' hands, in tents, in buried stashes and in cars, up to a limit per item. That is the single most important fact about DayZ loot: a rifle in your base is a rifle the server will not respawn. Our extremely rare list is, in effect, the items with the smallest nominal counts.

Lifetimes

When loot disappears

Every item has a lifetime in seconds. Loose loot on the floor lasts a few hours; items inside persistent containers such as tents, barrels, crates and buried stashes reset their timer whenever a player interacts with them and can last weeks; vehicles, fences and flags have their own long timers. When the timer runs out the item is cleaned up and its slot in the count opens, so something new can spawn. This is also why abandoned bases eventually empty themselves: nobody refreshes the timers. The base guide has the persistence rules.

Why buildings are empty

Hoarding, players and bad luck

Three reasons a building has nothing in it. Someone was there first: the economy only refills when the count drops, and it refills somewhere on the map, not necessarily here. Hoarding: a few groups with tents full of rifles can hold a server's entire nominal count of a weapon, so it never spawns for anyone else until their tents despawn or get raided. And proximity: the economy will not spawn loot in a building while a player is close, so standing in a barracks waiting for a gun to appear is the one thing that guarantees it will not. Leave the area, let the timer run, come back.

Restarts and wipes

What a restart does and does not do

A server restart does not reset loot. The economy saves its state and carries on; what was on the floor before is on the floor after, minus anything whose lifetime ran out during the downtime. A wipe is different: the persistence file is deleted, every tent, base and stash goes, and the economy starts from an empty map, which is why the first hour after a wipe is the best looting there is. Official servers wipe with major updates; community servers wipe on their own schedule. The servers page explains hives, restarts and wipes.

What actually works

  • Go where others do not. Loot is replaced across the map, so a village off the main routes refills while the airfield stays stripped.
  • Hit the right building for the item. Hunting stands for hunting gear, police stations for pistols and shotguns, medical buildings for medicine, barracks and tents for rifles. The loot by source pages map it.
  • Check dynamic events. Helicopter crashes, convoys and train wrecks have their own counts and refill on their own cycle; the events page lists them.
  • Infected carry loot. Military infected carry military items; a quiet melee kill is often a faster rifle than a barracks.
  • Pick servers with fewer players or play right after a wipe.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

How does loot spawn in DayZ?

Through the Central Loot Economy. Each item has a target count, allowed building types and map tiers, and a lifetime. When the count on the server falls below target, replacements spawn in valid buildings that no player is near.

Why is there no loot in DayZ?

Either someone looted the area already and the economy has not yet refilled it, players are hoarding that item in tents so the count is full, or you are standing too close for loot to spawn. Leave, wait, come back.

Does restarting a DayZ server reset loot?

No. Loot persists through restarts. Only a wipe resets it, and a wipe also removes every base, tent and stash.

Where does military loot spawn in DayZ?

In high-tier zones: Tisy and the north-west airfield on Chernarus, the northern military sites on Livonia, military islands on Sakhal, and at helicopter crashes and convoys on every map.

How long does loot last on the ground in DayZ?

A few hours for loose items. Items in tents, barrels, crates and buried stashes last far longer and reset their timer each time a player interacts with the container.
