The world of DayZ
DayZ never explains itself, and most of what players call lore is guesswork. This page keeps the three apart: what the game shows you, what Bohemia’s older games say about these places, and what is simply unknown.
The outbreak
What the game tells you
In the game. Something has infected almost everyone. Towns are empty, the military has pulled back to its bases and lost them, the roads are blocked with wrecks, and you arrive on the coast with a rag, a flare and a fruit. Nobody tells you what happened, how long ago, or whether anywhere else is better. Survivors are immune, or have not been infected yet; nothing in the game says which. There is no cure item, no cure quest and no ending.
From Bohemia. The studio has kept the cause unexplained since the 2012 mod and has said in interviews that the mystery is deliberate. Treat anything more specific as fan theory.
The infected
Not zombies
In the game. The infected are living people. They breathe, bleed, hear and see, run, and die from a knife to the head like anyone else; they do not rise again and they do not eat you. They wear the clothes they were infected in, which is why the ones at military bases wear uniforms and the ones in Sakhal wear parkas. Since 1.13 some are stronger: heavy soldiers, officers, runners. Since 1.14 some are contaminated and spread the gas sickness. How they sense you and how to kill them is on infected.
Chernarus
South Zagoria and the civil war
From Bohemia’s Arma lore. Chernarus is a fictional post-Soviet republic on the Green Sea, created for Arma 2 in 2009. The DayZ map is its eastern province, South Zagoria. Arma 2’s story put the region through a 2009 civil war between the Chernarussian Defence Forces and the Chedaki insurgency, with Russian and American troops involved, which is why the map has so many bases, checkpoints and wrecked armour, and why the signs are in Cyrillic.
In DayZ. The civil war is history; what you see is the outbreak that came after. Military tents at Stary Sobor, the field hospital at the north-east airfield, the barricades on the roads and the abandoned vehicles are the only narrative, and the game leaves you to read them. Towns are described on the Chernarus guide.
Livonia
The Nadbor region
From Bohemia’s Arma lore. Livonia was built for Arma 3 Contact in 2019: a fictional country on the Polish and Russian frontier, and the terrain is its Nadbor region, Polish-speaking, forested and poor. Contact’s story was about a first-contact event there; DayZ keeps the land and drops the aliens.
In DayZ. The underground bunker near Dambog, the field hospital at Lukow, the amusement parks and the quarries added in 1.19 are the map’s story beats, and the bunker’s punched-card door is as close as DayZ gets to a scripted mystery. See the Livonia guide.
Sakhal
The far east
In DayZ. Sakhal is new ground: a volcanic archipelago in the far east with Russian and Japanese place names, fishing villages, a geothermal plant, a prison camp, military outposts on the outer islands and the Burukan bunker, whose door is powered from the briefcase of the Frozen Scientist event. The scientist and the bunker are the first time Bohemia has told a small story through an event. See the Sakhal guide.
Nasdara
Western Takistan
From Bohemia’s Arma lore. Takistan is the Central Asian desert country of Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead (2010), a place of oil, mountains and a war the players fought in. Nasdara is a province on its western edge.
In DayZ. The outbreak reached Takistan too, and the Nasdara of Badlands is a land of ruined villages that can be rebuilt, irrigation tunnels, oil fields, and Morse-code broadcasts pointing to underground shelters. Someone built those shelters and is still broadcasting, which is the most lore DayZ has ever given a map. See the Nasdara guide.
Places with a story
Landmarks people argue about
- Green Mountain (Chernarus): the radio tower on the hill west of Zelenogorsk, the subject of more mod-era ghost stories than anywhere in the game. In DayZ it is a tower and a fence.
- The Rify (Chernarus): the cargo ship wrecked on the north-east coast, now a static contaminated zone. Nobody knows what it carried.
- Prison Island (Chernarus): the island prison off the south-west coast. Cells, a wall, and a swim back.
- The castles: Devil’s Castle, Zub and the rest are centuries older than the outbreak and the stage for the Halloween events.
- Tisy (Chernarus): the big base in the far north-west, with the feel of a last stand.
- The Dambog and Burukan bunkers: deliberately built, deliberately locked, and the only places where the game asks you to solve something.
What nobody knows
Unknown
- What the infection is, where it started and how it spreads to survivors, if it does.
- What year it is in the game and how long since the outbreak.
- Who you are, why you were at sea, and why everyone washes up on the same coast.
- Who is broadcasting the Morse code on Nasdara.
- Whether any of this will carry into DayZ 2. Bohemia has not announced the sequel; see what we know.
Community maps have their own stories, Namalsk’s above all; those are on community maps and are not part of Bohemia’s world.
