Size
Areas are approximate. Sources disagree on Sakhal: one wiki page gives 83 km² and another about 105, and Bohemia’s release says “80+”. The bar uses 105. Sakhal is the smallest map and the hardest on your body.
The maps
Base game~225 km²The original. Walk inland from the coast and avoid the airfields until you’re kitted.
Fewer, smaller towns and more walking. Dry off and keep moving between villages.
Frostline DLC83–105 km²The smallest map and the hardest on your body. Make fire first, loot second.
Badlands DLC~267 km²Find shade and a well first. Mopeds and enduros spawn here most.

Chernarus and Livonia are free with the base game. Badlands costs under $25, with regional variation.

Community maps
PC players can run community terrains from the Steam Workshop, such as Namalsk, Deer Isle and Chiemsee. Update 1.30 changed the navmesh format, so each one needs an updated build before it works. The list is on Maps & locations.
Questions
Nasdara, from the Badlands expansion, at about 267 km². Chernarus is about 225, Livonia about 163 and Sakhal roughly 83 to 105 depending on the source.
Chernarus and Livonia come with the base game. Sakhal needs the Frostline expansion and Nasdara needs Badlands.
Chernarus is the usual starting point: it’s the original and most guides, including ours, are written around it. Livonia is a good second map because it’s also in the base game.

Yes, but it’s an item: a paper map you have to find and carry. A compass and a GPS receiver with a battery help you read it.
