Survival strategies

The first hour, the loot economy, dynamic events, other players, navigation, and a plan that gets you to a base.

The first hour

A fresh spawn plan that works

You spawn on the coast (Chernarus, Sakhal) or at inland points (Livonia, Nasdara) with a shirt, trousers, shoes, a rag, a piece of fruit and a glow stick or flare. Everyone dies the same way early: thirst, a bleed, or a player. This plan beats all three.

  1. Turn around and leave the spawn. Coast towns are stripped and watched. Walk inland at once; do not loot the first town you see.
  2. Find water first. A well (hand pump) in any village is unlimited clean water. Drink until the icon is bright. Fill a bottle if you find one.
  3. Get a knife and a bag. A kitchen knife or stone knife (two stones), a burlap sack (sheds, barns) plus rope (six rags) makes a courier bag. Now you can carry food.
  4. Get food that will not kill you. Apples and pears from trees, cans with a pull tab, crackers, cereal. Save raw meat until you have a fire.
  5. Get a weapon that makes no noise. An axe, machete or knife. Avoid gunfights for the first hour: a rifle without ammo is a magnet for other rifles.
  6. Fix your feet and head. Boots to stop cuts, a hat for warmth. Then a jacket with pockets.
  7. Pick a direction and a reason. A hunting cabin for a rifle, a military tent for armour, or a quiet village for a base. Walking without a goal is how you starve at night.
  8. Make a fire before dark. Sticks, rags, matches. Cook, dry off, warm up, then put it out and move a few hundred metres before sleeping it off in a shed.

Loot

Where things spawn and how the economy works

Items spawn through the Central Economy. Each item type has a minimum and maximum count on the server and a list of places it can appear. When the count is below the minimum, it respawns somewhere nobody is standing. That has two consequences: looted towns refill while you are away, and rare items only exist in a handful of places at once.

Helicopter crashes

Smoke columns on the horizon. A few on the map at any time, moving when looted. Military rifles and the best gear, plus other players arriving for the same reason.

Military convoys

Added in 1.29: wrecked convoys on roads with military loot. Also appear on Chernarus and Livonia.

Toxic zones

Static contaminated military sites and dynamic gas events marked by sirens and smoke. NBC suit plus filtered mask required. The reward is some of the best loot in the game.

Underground bunkers

Livonia has an underground facility opened with a punched card from a dynamic event. Nasdara has shelters found by Morse-code radio signals.

Loot tiers

Chernarus is split into tiers from the coast inland: the further from the spawn coast, the better the military loot. Nasdara mirrors this from its spawn points.

Respawn timing

Loot refills when nobody is near. Leave a town for ten minutes and come back; it will have changed.

Other players

Fighting, talking, hiding

Assume hostile

Most encounters end with a shot. Treat every player as armed and watching until proven otherwise, and never stand still in the open.

Voice is a weapon

Direct voice chat carries about 50 metres and tells everyone where you are. Talk only when you have cover and something to gain.

Peek, do not expose

Third-person servers let people see over walls; first-person servers reward patience. Learn lean and crouch-peek, and never cross a doorway without looking.

Night

Pitch black on official servers. NVGs are king; a torch makes you a target. Move on moonlit nights, hold up on dark ones.

Trading and surrender

Hands up (F2 on PC) signals surrender. Some players honour it, some do not. Handcuffs and rope restrain a captive; a burlap sack blinds them.

Rules of a firefight

Cover, then reload, then move. Bandage behind cover. Change position after every kill. Loot bodies last, never in the open.

Navigation and movement

Finding your way

Read the map

The paper map item (M) shows the full terrain with town names. Match the road signs (town names in Cyrillic on Chernarus, Polish on Livonia, English and Farsi on Nasdara) to the map.

Use the sun and the coast

On Chernarus the sea is south and east, so the coast is always behind you going inland. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west on every map.

Compass and GPS

A compass gives heading; a GPS receiver with a battery gives coordinates that match community map sites.

Stamina and weight

Everything you carry shortens your sprint. Drop the cans you will not eat; a heavy pack gets you killed by a lighter player.

Stay off roads

Roads are where cars and ambushes are. Walk treelines, cross roads at a run, and use ridges to look before you move.

Swimming

Possible, slow, soaks everything and drops heavy items. Keep ammo and matches in a protective case or drybag.

Long-term survival

From day one to a base

  1. Days 1 to 2: tools. Knife, axe, bag, water bottle, fire kit, a rifle with ammunition you can actually find (shotgun or hunting rifle), warm clothes. A tent or barrel hidden in the woods as a first stash.
  2. Days 3 to 5: food security. A fishing rod on the coast or a garden plot in the hills. Dry meat for the road. A second fire kit.
  3. Days 5 to 10: military. Convoys, crashes and tier-3 zones for a rifle with magazines, a plate carrier and a helmet. Go in with a full stomach and a bandage ready, and leave the moment you have what you came for.
  4. Week 2: a base. Fences, a gate, a code or combination lock, a flag pole to keep it from despawning, crates buried nearby as insurance. Build small and far from roads; big bases get raided.
  5. Then: vehicles and reach. A car or bike turns a map into a neighbourhood. Keep it fuelled, keep it hidden under a camo net, and expect to lose it anyway.

The best survival tool is a plan that survives you dying. Stashes you can walk back to, a friend who knows where they are, and a server you understand.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

What should I do first in DayZ?

Leave the coast, find a well and drink, get a knife and a bag, eat safe food, pick up a silent weapon, then make a fire before night. Avoid gunfights for the first hour.

Where is the best loot in DayZ?

Military zones inland (airfields, bunkers, bases), helicopter crash sites, military convoys and toxic zones. On Chernarus the north-west airfield and Tisy are the top tier.

How does loot respawn in DayZ?

The Central Economy keeps each item between a minimum and maximum count on the server and spawns replacements where no players are nearby, so towns refill while you are away.

How do you find your way in DayZ?

Read road signs and match them to the paper map (M), use the coast and sun for direction, and carry a compass. A GPS receiver gives coordinates.
