Farming in DayZ, from seed to harvest

A garden plot is the only food source in DayZ that comes to you. This guide covers the whole loop: where seeds come from, what tool digs the plot, how water and fertiliser change growth, when to pick, and why one pumpkin plant beats a backpack of canned food.

Why farm

What a garden gives you

Everything else you eat in DayZ has to be found, hunted or fished. A garden is the one food source that produces on its own while you do something else. Pumpkins and zucchini are among the most filling single items in the game, a plot is quiet, and once you have seeds the supply never runs out, because every harvest gives you more seeds than you planted. The trade-off is time and a fixed location: a plot cannot move, so farming is for a base or a camp you return to, not for a run up the coast.

Farming also fixes the two things that kill most medium-term characters: a steady calorie supply and a steady water supply, since a plot needs you near water anyway. See farming for a base in the survival guide for where it fits in a longer life.

Seeds

Where seeds come from

There are two ways to get seeds. Find a seed pack as loot, or take seeds from a vegetable you already have.

The vegetable route is the reliable one. Every farm village has pumpkin and tomato plants growing wild in gardens and greenhouses; one vegetable and a knife turns into a seed pack, and a seed pack plants several slots. Once a plot has produced once, you never need to find seeds again.

The plot

Digging a garden plot

You need a digging tool and open ground. A farming hoe, shovel, field shovel or pickaxe all work; the hoe is lightest and the shovel doubles as a base tool. Stand on soft ground, grass or soil rather than road or concrete, look down and use the dig action. The plot appears as a rectangle of turned earth with planting slots. Greenhouses in villages come with ready-made plots you can plant straight away, which is the fastest start on Chernarus and Livonia.

Each slot takes one seed. Drag seeds onto the plot or use the plant action while looking at a slot. Plots are persistent: they stay on the server like a tent or a barrel, so a plot by a base keeps working between sessions.

Growing

Water, lime and the growth stages

A planted slot goes through stages: seed, sprout, growing, ripe, then spoiled if you leave it. Two things speed it up.

  • Water. Pour from a canteen, water bottle or cooking pot onto the slot. A dry slot grows slowly or not at all; a watered one grows in a fraction of the time. Rain waters plots for you.
  • Fertiliser. Garden lime or guts applied to the slot before planting shortens the growth time and gives a bigger harvest. Lime is farm and shed loot; guts come from any animal you gut.

Watered and fertilised, a plant is ripe within roughly a real-time hour on an official server; unwatered it can take several times longer. Ripe plants do not wait for ever: pick them or they rot in the slot and you lose the slot until you dig it again.

Harvest and replant

Picking and the seed loop

Use the harvest action on a ripe plant. Pumpkins and zucchini come off whole; tomatoes, peppers and potatoes come off as several fruit. Immediately cut one of the harvest with a knife to get seeds, plant them back into the same slots, water, and the plot is running again. One pumpkin gives enough seeds to replant more slots than it took, so a single plant started from one wild pumpkin becomes a self-sustaining garden in two cycles.

Cook what you keep. Raw vegetables are fine to eat, but baked or boiled they give more and spoil slower; see cooking states and methods and the cooking guide.

Crop by crop

What each crop is worth

Values are from our item pages; the ranking is ours.

CropHarvestWhy grow it
PumpkinOne large pumpkin per slotThe most filling crop and the best seed return. Cut into slices to share or carry.
ZucchiniOne per slotNearly as filling as pumpkin, lighter to carry.
TomatoSeveral per slotMore water than food; good for hydration, light, quick to eat.
PepperSeveral per slotSmall and light; fine as a top-up, poor as a main source.
PotatoSeveral per slotFilling once baked; the slot gives several, so good calories per slot.
CannabisBudsNot food. Rare seeds; grown for trade on community servers.

If you only grow one thing, grow pumpkins. If you have a water source next to the plot, add tomatoes for drink.

Farming at a base

Where to put the plot

Dig inside the walls if you have them, or on the far side of the base from the road if you do not. A plot is visible from a distance as a patch of bare earth, and a line of pumpkins is a sign that someone lives here, so other players treat a garden the way they treat a tent. Put it near a well, pond or stream so watering is a thirty-second job, and keep a spare seed pack in a crate in case the plot is found. On Sakhal, plots work in the lowlands but the cold slows everything; grow inside a greenhouse where one exists. On Nasdara, water is the limit: plan the plot around the nearest well.

The base-building guide covers walls, gates and locks; the base calculator counts the materials.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

How do you farm in DayZ?

Dig a garden plot with a hoe, shovel or pickaxe on soft ground, plant seeds in the slots, water them and wait. Garden lime or guts applied before planting speed it up. Harvest when ripe and cut one vegetable with a knife to get seeds for the next cycle.

Where do you find seeds in DayZ?

Seed packs spawn in farms, barns, sheds and greenhouses. Faster: cut any pumpkin, tomato, pepper, zucchini or potato with a knife and you get seeds.

How long do plants take to grow in DayZ?

Watered and fertilised, roughly an hour of real time on official servers; unwatered, several times longer. Server owners can change the rate.

Do you need to water plants in DayZ?

Yes, unless it rains. Pour water from a canteen, bottle or cooking pot onto the slot. Dry plots grow very slowly.

What is the best crop to grow in DayZ?

Pumpkin. It is the most filling crop, gives the best seed return and can be cut into slices to share.
