Scopes and sights, every optic in DayZ
Twenty-one optics, from a pistol red dot to a 12x hunting scope, sorted by what they fit. The table is built from our item pages; the advice at the end is ours.
How to read it
Magnification, zeroing and fit
Magnification is how much closer the target looks; 1x sights are for speed, anything above 4x is for distance. Zeroing is the range the sight is set to hit at; our combat guide explains aiming above or below it. Fits lists the rifles the optic mounts on, from our item pages; the weapon compatibility tool checks any pairing. Rarity is the loot tier from our loot economy data.

Which optic at what range
Our picks
| Range | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Inside buildings, under 50 m | Iron sights, Kobra, RVN, Holo | 1x, both eyes open, fastest to the target. Magnification is a handicap at this range. |
| Town streets, 50 to 200 m | Holo or Baraka on Western rifles, P1-87-L or 1PN51 on Eastern ones | Enough zoom to pick a head out of a window without losing the ability to snap-aim. |
| Open ground, 200 to 500 m | ATOG 4x32, PSO-1, Hunting scope at 4x | Fixed mid-power scopes with ranging reticles. The ATOG has a 1x backup sight on top for when someone walks round the corner. |
| Long shots, 500 m and beyond | Marksman scope (to 10x), Hunting scope (to 12x), PSO-6, PU scope on a Mosin | Only the variable scopes and the PSO-6 give enough zoom to see a prone target past 500 m. Bullet drop becomes the problem, not the glass. |
The Marksman is the one optic that does all of it, 3.5x to 10x on almost every Western rifle, which is why it is extremely rare. If you only find one good scope, it is the one to keep.
Night optics
Seeing in the dark
Two scopes have built-in night vision: the NV-PVS4 for Western rifles and the 1PN51 for Eastern ones. Both need a 9V battery to show the night image and work as ordinary 3.5x scopes by day. They are extremely rare; most night fights are decided by NVG goggles and a plain sight instead. The power and light page covers batteries and NVGs.
Batteries
Which sights need one
Every red dot, holo and illuminated-reticle scope runs on a 9V battery for about 42 minutes of active use. A dead battery turns a red dot into a blank window and a PSO into a plain black reticle, which still works. Night-vision scopes do not work at night without one. Carry a spare; batteries weigh nothing.
Zeroing
Setting the range
On PC, Page Up and Page Down step the zeroing through the sight's range; on consoles it is the d-pad. The table above gives each sight's range and, where the game sets one, its default. A sight zeroed at 100 m hits low at 300 and high at 50, so for an unknown distance leave it at the default and aim high for far targets. The ammo guide has the drop for each round.
Quick answers
Questions people ask
What is the best scope in DayZ?
The Marksman scope: 3.5x to 10x variable on most Western rifles. For Eastern rifles the PSO-6 at 6x, and for bolt-actions the Hunting scope at up to 12x. All three are rare or extremely rare.
Which scopes fit the M4-A1 in DayZ?
Combat, RVN, Baraka and Holo sights, the ATOG 4x32 and 6x48, the Marksman scope, the NV-PVS4, the carry handle sights and backup iron sights.
Which scopes fit the KA-M in DayZ?
Kobra sights, the P1-87-L, PSO-1, PSO-1-1, PSO-6 and the 1PN51 night scope.
Do scopes need batteries in DayZ?
Red dots, holo sights and illuminated reticles use a 9V battery for about 42 minutes. Magnified scopes still work without one; night-vision scopes do not work at night without one.
How do I zero a scope in DayZ?
Page Up and Page Down on PC, the d-pad on consoles. Each sight has a zeroing range listed above.
