DayZ controls and keybinds
The default bindings you need to move, fight, loot, talk and drive in DayZ, on keyboard and mouse and on both consoles. Where a binding could not be confirmed, the table shows a dash.
Before you start
How DayZ controls work
DayZ leans heavily on context. The same key can sprint, aim or start a heavy swing depending on whether your hands are raised and what you are holding, and the interact button only does something when you look at a door, a ladder or an item. Learn the handful of core inputs first and the rest follows.
Everything below is a default binding. On PC you can change any of them under Options > Controls. Since update 1.18 that menu is split into categories, and you can bind any gesture to any key. On console, update 1.17 reworked the controller layout and added an alternative control scheme, which you can switch to from the controls screen in the main or pause menu. The tables show the default scheme.
The PlayStation and Xbox versions share one layout: Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle match A, B, X and Y, L1/R1 match LB/RB, L2/R2 match LT/RT, and the Touchpad does the job of the View button.
Many older guides predate update 1.17. Since then, push-to-talk on console sits on D-pad left (not D-pad down), fire mode needs the left trigger held plus D-pad right, and a heavy attack is a press of Y/Triangle rather than a hold.
Getting around
Movement controls
Jogging is your default pace. Walking, crouching and going prone are slower but keep a lower profile. Sprinting burns stamina, so save it for crossing open ground.
| Action | PC (keyboard/mouse) | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move | W A S D | Left stick | Left stick |
| Walk (hold) / lock walking (double-tap) | Left Ctrl | Tilt left stick partway | Tilt left stick partway |
| Sprint | Hold Left Shift | Click L3 | Click left stick |
| Jump, vault or climb over | Space | Cross | A |
| Crouch / stand | C (tap) | Circle (tap) | B (tap) |
| Go prone | Hold C | Hold Circle | Hold B |
| Lean left / right | Q / E (double-tap to lock) | Hold L2 + L1 / R1 | Hold LT + LB / RB |
| Free look | Hold Left Alt (double-tap to lock) | Hold L1 | Hold LB |
| Focus your eyes (zoom) | Hold middle mouse | Double-tap L1 | Double-tap LB |
| First / third person | V or Enter | Double-click R3 | Double-click right stick |
| Get on or off a ladder | F | Square | X |
| Slide down a ladder | Hold Left Shift + S | — | — |
Switching perspective does nothing on first-person-only servers. When you reach the top of a tall ladder, step off with the interact key rather than walking off the edge.
Fighting
Combat and weapon controls
Nothing fires or swings until you raise your hands. Hold right mouse (or the left trigger) to bring up a weapon, or your fists if your hands are empty, then attack. For gun choice and optics, see weapons and attachments.
| Action | PC (keyboard/mouse) | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raise weapon or fists | Hold right mouse | Hold L2 | Hold LT |
| Fire / light melee attack | Left mouse (while raised) | R2 (while raised) | RT (while raised) |
| Heavy melee attack | Left Shift + left mouse (while raised) | Triangle (while raised) | Y (while raised) |
| Block | Hold S (while raised) | — | — |
| Aim down sights | Left Shift or middle mouse (while raised) | Click R3 (while raised) | Click right stick (while raised) |
| Switch between scope and iron sights | Mouse wheel (while aiming) | — | — |
| Hold breath | Hold Left Ctrl (while aiming) | Hold L3 (while aiming) | Hold left stick (while aiming) |
| Zeroing up / down | Page Up / Page Down | D-pad up / down (while raised) | D-pad up / down (while raised) |
| Change fire mode | X | Hold L2 + D-pad right | Hold LT + D-pad right |
| Chamber a round / reload | R (tap to chamber, hold to reload) | Hold Triangle | Hold Y |
| Eject a round | — | Double-tap Triangle | Double-tap Y |
| Melee with a firearm | F (while raised) | — | — |
Zeroing moves in steps of roughly 100 m on most rifles. Holding your breath steadies your aim but drains stamina, so let go between shots. Heavy attacks can stagger a target but cost more stamina than light ones, so use them on infected and players when you have stamina to spare.
Left Shift does three jobs on PC: it sprints with your hands lowered, aims down sights with a gun raised, and turns a melee swing into a heavy attack.
Looting
Inventory and action controls
On PC you mostly drag and drop inside the inventory screen. On console each face button does a set job while the inventory is open. Items you use often belong on the quickbar so you are not digging through your bag mid-fight.
| Action | PC (keyboard/mouse) | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open / close inventory | Tab | Touchpad | View |
| Interact (doors, pick up, ladders) | F | Square | X |
| Use the item in your hands | Left mouse | R2 | RT |
| Cycle through available actions | Mouse wheel | — | — |
| Use a quickbar slot | Number keys 1–9, 0 | Hold R1, then choose | Hold RB, then choose |
| Assign to the quickbar (in inventory) | Drag item onto a slot | Hold L3 | Hold left stick |
| Take item into hands (in inventory) | Drag to the hands slot | Cross | A |
| Equip or split a stack (in inventory) | — | Triangle | Y |
| Combine items (in inventory) | Drag one item onto the other | Circle | B |
| Throw the item in your hands | Tap G | Double-tap Square, then R2 | Double-tap X, then RT |
| Drop the item in your hands | Hold G | Hold Square | Hold X |
| Inspect an item (in inventory) | Middle mouse | — | — |
| Hide quickbar / hide HUD | Tap ~ / hold ~ | — | — |
| Head torch / night vision | Tap L / hold L | — | — |
Combining is how most crafting works, and many equipment items, from radios to the GPS receiver, only work once a battery is attached the same way. Night vision needs a set such as the night vision goggles on an NVG headstrap.
Talking
Voice, radio and gestures
Voice chat in DayZ is proximity-based: only players near you hear you, and how far your voice carries depends on the range you pick. Gestures are often the safer way to say you are friendly before you get close enough to talk.
| Action | PC (keyboard/mouse) | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Push-to-talk | Hold Caps Lock | Hold D-pad left | Hold D-pad left |
| Toggle voice on / off | Double-tap Caps Lock | Double-tap D-pad left | Double-tap D-pad left |
| Change voice range | Up arrow | D-pad left + R1 / L1 | D-pad left + RB / LB |
| Gesture menu | Hold . (full stop) | Hold D-pad right | Hold D-pad right |
| Hello | F1 | Gesture menu | Gesture menu |
| Surrender | F5 | Gesture menu | Gesture menu |
| Suicide (eligible item in hands) | F11 | Gesture menu | Gesture menu |
Other gestures sit on the remaining F keys or are unbound until you assign them. The surrender gesture is no longer possible while standing on cars and boats.
A handheld transceiver lets you talk beyond earshot:
- Power it. Attach a 9V battery to the radio.
- Switch it on. With the radio in your hands, press left mouse once.
- Pick a frequency. Hold left mouse to change channel. There are seven: 87.8, 89.5, 91.3, 94.6, 96.6, 99.7 and 102.5. Strangers usually meet on the default, 87.8; move elsewhere for private talk.
- Talk normally. Use your usual voice chat key. Radios on the same frequency within roughly 5 km pick you up.
The radio does not replace proximity chat. Anyone near you still hears your voice, and a radio left on the ground plays incoming traffic to everyone around it. A megaphone works differently: hold left mouse to raise it to your mouth before you speak.
Driving and finding your way
Vehicle and navigation controls
You get in, start the engine and get out through the interact prompt. Most cars need you to change gear yourself, so shift up as speed builds; the M1025 uses an automatic gearbox. More on keeping a car running is on the vehicles page.
| Action | PC (keyboard/mouse) | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerate | W | R2 | RT |
| Brake | S | L2 | LT |
| Steer | A / D | Left stick | Left stick |
| Gear up / gear down | E / Q | Circle / Cross | B / A |
| Fast / gentle acceleration | Hold Left Shift / Left Ctrl with W | Press R2 fully / partway | Press RT fully / partway |
| Strong / light braking | Hold Left Shift / Left Ctrl with S | — | — |
| Handbrake | Space | Hold R1 | — |
| Horn | H | Hold L3 | — |
| Headlights | — | Triangle | Y |
DayZ has no minimap on vanilla servers. You find your way with items and landmarks, and you can read more on the maps page.
Paper map
On PC, press M to open it while one is in your inventory. On console there is no dedicated button: take it into your hands and hold RT or R2. A paper map does not mark where you are.
Compass
Hold it in your hands and press left mouse to open it. To read the bearing more easily, inspect it with middle mouse in the inventory. It can also hang from a backpack strap.
GPS receiver
Attach a 9V battery and use the Switch On action. It shows your coordinates and altitude, and combined with a tourist map it puts that information on the map screen.
Trail boards
Boards at hiking trail junctions show your current position, which is a free fix if you have no map or GPS.
Beginner tips
Hidden tricks and settings worth changing
A few inputs behave differently when you tap, hold or double-tap them. These are the ones worth knowing early:
Double-tap to lock
Double-tap Left Ctrl to keep walking, Q or E to stay leaned, Left Alt to keep free look on, and Caps Lock to leave your mic open.
Tap or hold R
Tapping R chambers a round; holding it reloads from your inventory. Holding the quickbar number of a magazine swaps it straight in.
Scroll for options
When something offers several actions, the mouse wheel cycles them. While aiming, it switches between a scope and backup iron sights.
Faster ladders
Hold Left Shift and S to slide down a ladder instead of climbing down rung by rung.
Throw or drop
Tap G to throw what you are holding and hold G to drop it. Recent updates also let you drop items mid-sprint.
Watch your stamina
Holding breath, sprinting and heavy attacks all draw on stamina. Keep some in reserve before a fight starts.
Then spend five minutes in the options menu:
- Choose your voice input. Under Sound, Input mode switches between push-to-talk and voice activation, with a slider for the activation threshold. Consoles have had voice activation since update 1.17.
- Set field of view. Game > Field of View changes how wide your resting view is.
- Tune sensitivity. Controls has separate sliders for aiming, moving and steering, and since update 1.27 you can type an exact value. Console players also get analogue stick dead zone options.
- Decide on HUD elements. Show HUD, Show quickbar and Show crosshair are under Game. Some servers turn the crosshair off for everyone regardless.
- Keep sound when tabbed out. On PC, set Update in Background to Graphics and sound so you still hear footsteps while in another window.
- Bind your gestures. On PC, give friendly gestures such as Hello their own keys so you can signal quickly.
