Combat in DayZ, explained
DayZ fights are short, quiet and usually decided before the first shot. This guide covers what the game never tells you: how damage works, why you fell over, what zeroing is, when a gun jams, and how to turn a bad position into a good one.
How damage works
Health, blood and shock
Every hit in DayZ does three kinds of damage at once: health, blood and shock. Health is the bar that kills you at zero. Blood drops from wounds and bleeding and makes you weak, pale and eventually dead. Shock is the one new players never see: it builds up with every hit and when it passes your current health you fall unconscious. That is why one rifle round, or a single well-placed melee hit, drops a character who still has plenty of health. Every item in our wiki lists its damage as health / blood / shock, for example the 7.62x39mm round.
| Stat | What drains it | What it does at zero | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health | Hits, bleeding, starvation, disease | Death | Slowly, when fed and hydrated |
| Blood | Bleeding, hits | Death, after a long blurry decline | Food and water over time; a saline bag or transfusion is faster |
| Shock | Hits, falls, pain | Unconscious when shock exceeds health | Fast, within a minute or two; epinephrine wakes you at once |
The medical side, from bandages to blood types, is on medical.
What a hit does
Where you get hit matters
Damage is scaled by body part and by what you are wearing. Head hits multiply damage and shock; a helmet absorbs part of it and is ruined in the process. Torso hits are reduced by vests and plate carriers, which is why a plate carrier is the most contested item in the game. Limb hits do less, but a hit on the legs can break a bone, and a broken leg without a splint means crawling. Clothing takes damage too: a bullet through a jacket damages the jacket and everything in its pockets, so the medkit you were relying on may be ruined by the hit that made you need it.
Bullets also cause bleeding. Every bleed is a small, steady loss of blood until you bandage it, and several at once will kill you faster than the hit itself. Bandage first, fight second, unless the enemy is already in the doorway. Which armour stops what is ranked on best armour.
Guns and ammo
The gun matters less than the round
Damage comes from the cartridge, not the rifle. A Mosin and a VSD fire the same 7.62x54mmR round and hit just as hard; the difference is rate of fire, magazine, range and rarity. Our ammo guide and best weapons rank them, and weapon compatibility shows which rounds, magazines and attachments fit what.
- Loading. Most rifles take a magazine; some, like the Mosin and the SK 59/66, load loose rounds one at a time, which is slow but means any round you find is ammunition.
- Chambering. A fresh magazine does not put a round in the chamber. Rack the weapon or you will click when it matters.
- Jams. A gun in bad condition, or ammunition that is damaged, can jam. Clear it with the reload action, and keep a weapon cleaning kit for anything you plan to rely on.
- Condition. Worn and damaged guns are less accurate and jam more. Ruined guns do not fire. Repair with a cleaning kit; attachments repair separately.
- Wet. A soaked weapon is a jam waiting to happen. Dry it like clothing.
Aiming and zeroing
Bullet drop and zeroing
Bullets drop with distance and the game models it. Zeroing sets your sights for a given range: on PC Page Up and Page Down step it, on consoles it is on the d-pad. Zeroed to 100 m and shooting at a target 300 m away, you aim over their head; zeroed to 300 m at a target 100 m away, you aim low. Iron sights and most scopes support zeroing; the number shows on screen while you adjust it.
- Stance. Prone is steadiest, crouched is a good compromise, standing sways. Use a wall, a window frame or a rock as a rest.
- Breath. Hold breath while aiming to steady the sight for a few seconds; do not do it with low stamina.
- Stamina. A character who has just sprinted sways wildly. Stop, breathe, then shoot.
- Scopes. Magnified optics are for the open country; inside towns a red dot or irons wins because you see more. Our attachments pages list every optic and what it mounts on.
- Leading. At long range a running target has moved by the time the bullet lands. Aim a body width ahead.
Noise and suppressors
Everyone heard that
Gunshots carry for a very long way, and infected come to them. A suppressor cuts the noise sharply, so infected and players further away do not react, and makes it hard to tell where you fired from. Suppressors wear out with every shot and need replacing or repair. An improvised suppressor can be made from a plastic bottle and lasts a handful of rounds. Subsonic ammunition, which our ammo pages mark as Supersonic: No, stays quieter still. Firing from inside a building also hides the flash and muffles the direction. Everything about how infected hear you is in infected.
Melee and infected
When the gun is the wrong tool
Against infected, a gun is often the worst answer: it is loud and it brings five more. A good melee weapon kills an infected quietly in one or two heavy hits. Heavy attacks do more damage and more shock; light attacks are faster. Blades cause bleeding, blunt weapons stack shock. Raise your fists or weapon, let the infected lunge, step back, then swing. Against another player, melee is a last resort: a fist fight is lost to anyone with a pistol. Every melee weapon with its hit stats is ranked on best melee weapons, and how to kill infected has the step by step.
Winning a firefight
Position, information, then shooting
Our rules, not Bohemia’s. DayZ firefights are won by the player who knew first. Your eyes, your ears and your position do more than your aim.
- Look before you loot. Watch a town for a minute from the treeline. Open doors, dropped items and shouting are all signs.
- Never stand in a doorway or on a ridge line. Both frame you against the sky.
- Do not fire the first shot unless you will hit. A miss gives away your position and takes away your surprise.
- Move after you shoot. Fire two rounds, relocate, fire again. Staying put is how you get flanked.
- Bandage behind cover. One bleed will not kill you in thirty seconds; a second bullet will.
- Reload early. Swap a half magazine during a lull, not when it runs dry.
- Sound is a weapon. A silent partner who flanks while you draw fire ends most fights.
- Know when it is over. If you are outnumbered and bleeding, break line of sight, go through trees, not along a road, and leave. The gear is not worth the character.
Not fighting
The fight you do not have
Most characters that live a long time avoid most fights. Loot at odd hours, skip the Northwest Airfield when the server is full, take the forest route around towns and keep your weapon lowered when you meet someone: a raised weapon is read as hostile and gets you shot by people who were going to wave. Talk on voice early, loudly and from behind cover. Our rules for meeting other players and for being hard to see and hear are the other half of this guide.
Quick answers
Questions people ask
Why did I get knocked out in DayZ from one hit?
Shock damage. Every hit adds shock, and when shock exceeds your current health you fall unconscious. Head hits and heavy melee hits cause the most. Epinephrine wakes you immediately.
How does zeroing work in DayZ?
Zeroing sets your sights for a chosen range. On PC use Page Up and Page Down; on consoles the d-pad. At longer ranges than your zero, aim above the target; at shorter ranges, aim low.
Why does my gun click instead of firing?
No round in the chamber, a jam, or a ruined weapon. Rack the weapon after loading a magazine, use the reload action to clear a jam, and repair worn weapons with a cleaning kit.
Do suppressors work on infected in DayZ?
Yes. A suppressor cuts the noise so infected further away do not react, and it hides where you fired from. Suppressors wear out with use; an improvised bottle suppressor lasts a few shots.
Which body part does the most damage when hit?
The head. Helmets absorb part of it. Torso hits are reduced by vests and plate carriers; limb hits do less but can break bones.
What is the best way to fight infected?
A melee weapon, quietly. Let the infected lunge, step back, then land a heavy hit. Guns are loud and bring more.
